Networks and Knowledge in Roget's Thesaurus

Werner Hüllen

Oxford University Press

By way of a kind of linguistic game, one of the ‘Tables’ of John Wilkins' treatment of a universal language is arranged à la Roget, and one of the entry chapters of Roget's Thesaurus is arranged à la Wilkins. By so doing, the logical and semantic principles are emphasized which mark the skeleton of both works. Obviously, in both works time- and culture-bound words are ordered according to cognitive and perennial principles.

Keywords:   John Wilkins, macrostructure, stemma, semantico-logic relations, Roget, thesaurus
