The Theological Epistemology of Augustine's De Trinitate

Luigi Gioia

Oxford University Press

The chapter is devoted to the sequential analysis of books 1 to 7 of the De Trinitate and of its main themes: it provides a discussion of Arian interpretations of scriptural texts and of they logical and ontological categoriesof the Arians, which is aimed at denying the divinity of the Son. Most commentators treat books 1 to 4 separately from books 5 to 7 and consider them as a discrete, independent unit. On the contrary, treating each section of books 1 to 7 as a single unity is crucially important for the correct interpretation of Augustine's doctrine of the Trinity. This unity is built around the inseparability between soteriology and revelation and the issue of the knowledge of God.
