(p.22) 2 Reductionism, phenomena and models
Advanced Statistical Mechanics

Barry M. McCoy

Oxford University Press

This chapter explains the philosophy of reductionism and contrasts it with the philosophy used to study realistic complex systems. It presents examples of phase diagrams and magnetic phase transitions for real materials. The simplified models, both in the continuum and on the lattice, which will be used to describe these real physical phenomena are given in detail.

Keywords:   reductionism, phase transitions, realistic complex systems, phase diagrams, lattice
