(p.415) Chapter 47 Communication between patients and healthcare staff
An Introduction to Clinical Governance and Patient Safety

Elizabeth Haxby

Oxford University Press

Effective communication is fundamental to the provision of healthcare and ensures that patients are equal partners with the healthcare providers in making decisions about their health and treatment. This chapter discusses the key areas of effective communication: informed consent, ‘being open’ when things have gone wrong, and confidentiality. Healthcare staff must ensure that they are familiar with legislation and national guidance on management of patient identifiable information and ensure that disclosures can be justified and consent obtained wherever possible.
