In Paris, Jean-Marie works on the Encyclopedie méthodique, attends the Jacobin club and plans a new technical journal. The family rents a pied-a-terre, intending to return to the Beaujolais for the grape-harvest. Brissot is now a key member of the Assembly: his links with the future Gironde are described. In a surprise move, following a ministerial reshuffle in March, the king agrees to appoint several ‘Brissotin’ ministers, none of whom can be Assembly members. Dumouriez is first to be called. Why is Roland's name proposed for minister of the Interior? Taken aback at first, he accepts the job, and is regarded by courtiers as an extraordinary commoner (who fastens his shoes with ribbons not buckles).
