Among fish one can describe a wide variety of different life history transitions ranging from the transition of fry to juvenile as the yolk sac is depleted, to the dramatic ‘true’ or first metamorphosis observed in only in a few fish classes. Despite the variation in the degree of change associated with these transitions, in general they are driven by common regulatory processes/mechanisms, namely endocrine signals, which are in turn influenced by environmental cues. Although a wide range of hormones are involved in life history transitions, thyroid hormones have been shown to play a critical role in all species of fishes studied to date. This chapter provides an overview of the various types of life history transitions and explores their endocrine regulation. It focuses on the role of thyroid hormones as the common molecule regulating these transitions in fishes. Where data are available the role of thyroid hormones in mediating the transformation process, be they morphological, physiological, or biochemical in nature, at the cellular and molecular levels, are discussed.
