Return to Oxford?
In early August 1864, Newman was offered a five-acre plot of ground in Oxford. It was presented by an elderly Catholic who bought the land in the hope that one day it could be used for a Catholic college. Newman immediately thought of the opportunity of founding an Oratory at Oxford. All he needed was the money to acquire the land. Newman also thought of the possibility that the land might accommodate not only a college but also a church and oratory. But the bishop made it clear that he would only countenance an Oratory at Oxford for the sake of the mission there. However, the idea of an Oxford Oratory for a parish of about a hundred Catholics did not appeal to Newman. In the end, Newman agreed to take on the mission for the sake of a future Oxford Oratory, and promised not to offer accommodation to Catholic undergraduates.
