Organic, inorganic and composite ferroelectrics
Organic, inorganic and composite ferroelectrics
This is an introductory chapter that summarizes the recent advances in the field of ferroelectricity. The increase in the number of publications in different subfields and in the number of corresponding international conferences is presented. The chapter briefly describes five different classes of ferroelectrics, namely displacive ferroelectrics, order–disorder ferroelectrics, ferroelectric liquid crystals, relaxors and magnetoelectric systems. An overview of organic and inorganic ferroelectrics as well as composite ferroelectrics is presented. It is pointed out that the classical division of ferroelectrics into displacive and order–disorder ones is not rigorous and that displacive systems, like BaTiO3, have some order–disorder character too and that classical order–disorder ferroelectrics, like KH2PO4, have also some displacive character. Quantum effects in ferroelectrics, e.g. SrTiO3, SrTi18O3 as well as KH2PO4 are discussed as well.
Keywords: organic, inorganic ferroelectrics, composite ferroelectrics, different subfields of ferroelectrics, quantum effects
