Childhood Obesity Prevention

This chapter looks at childhood overweight and obesity trends in Israel. Obesity in childhood and adolescence has increased significantly over the past 30–40 years and this increase has also been observed in Israel, where the prevalence of overweight and obesity tripled since 1967, with a steady increase since 1987 (the birth cohort born after 1970). Low SES (socioeconomic status), and low education increased the risk of obesity. Due to this increased prevalence of obesity in adolescence over the past 30–40 years there is an urgent need to focus on prevention programs, change of diet, and the promotion of a more active lifestyle with more physical activity.
