I thank Peter for the compliment he paid me when he said my chapter is the best presentation he's seen of a certain line of argument. It's a slightly ambiguous compliment, perhaps; but I take it as a compliment, and I return the compliment. He's made the best reply to that line of argument that I've seen. I have, however, had some problems understanding precisely what his reply is. So in my response I'll restate my argument in a way designed to make our agreements and disagreements more perspicuous, relying partly on conversations we had at the conference after our session and subsequent email exchanges....
