Variations and resources
Variations and resources
In this chapter various dimensions of the representative claim are unpacked and analysed. These dimensions include singular and multiple, particular and general, implicit and explicit, internal and external, formal and informal, unidirectional and multidirectional, and nested claims. The chapter also explores the crucial role of performance in representative claim‐making, and seeks to recast representative types or roles as resources that varied actors can use in the making and performing of representative claims. The chapter elaborates on the aesthetic and cultural elements that are present in any representative claim – and therefore present in any political manifestation of representation – and examines the notion of the ubiquity of representation.
