Cicero's Role Models

Henriette van der Blom

Oxford University Press

In this final chapter, Cicero's self‐promotion as an exemplum to his own family is discussed. In particular, Cicero's relationships with his son Marcus, his brother Quintus, and his nephew Quintus are analysed with a view to Cicero's political motives for setting himself up as a family exemplum. Cicero's projected exemplarity was not only aimed at Marcus and his family but at the political elite at large in an attempt to promote the Cicerones as a family to be reckoned with in Roman politics. The issue of novitas versus nobilitas resurfaces as Marcus could not be considered a homo novus as his father had been, but the question remains whether he would count as a nobilis with all the advantages that implied.
