The Philosophy of Francisco Suárez

Jorge Secada

Oxford University Press

This essay examines a central feature of Suárez’s physics, the notion of quantity and continuous quantity in particular. Suárez’s treatment of continuous quantity is placed within the tradition bequeathed by Aristotle. It is argued, however, that Suárez added a number of features to this tradition that were significant to post-Cartesian developments of continuous quantity. The most important of these additions was the possibility of a dense yet discontinuous quantity because density (the property that between any two members of a series there is always at least a third) and discontinuity (the denial that two quantities are joined by a common terminus) became key features of modern mathematical treatments of quantity.
