This chapter continues the study of statements and prefaces by translators of classical verse into English, including those by George Chapman, Abraham Cowley, and John Dryden in the seventeenth century, Alexander Pope and William Cowper in the eighteenth, as well as the translation disputes of Matthew Arnold and F. W. Newman in the nineteenth. It concludes with a survey of classical translator statements in twentieth- and twenty-first-century English poetry, from Ezra Pound to Michael Longley and Anne Carson.
