This chapter looks at the translation of Sappho’s fragmentary verse, examining the strategies required for working on both the longer surviving poems and the shorter, often one-word fragments. It explores how new readings of Sappho’s poetry by classical scholars, such as Mary Lefkowitz and Page duBois, can also lead to new versions and poetry translations, with particular reference to Josephine Balmer’s Sappho: Poems and Fragments (1984 and 1992), as well as versions by Mary Barnard, Ezra Pound, Willis Barnstone, and Anne Carson.

Keywords:   Sappho, fragments, translation, Mary Lefkowitz, Page duBois, Josephine Balmer, Ezra Pound, Mary Barnard, Willis Barnstone, Anne Carson
