Propositionalism and Some Problem Cases

Propositionalism and Some Problem Cases

(p.73) Chapter 3 Propositionalism and Some Problem Cases
Pursuing Meaning

Emma Borg

Oxford University Press

This chapter looks at the examples commonly appealed to in recent literature which appear to show that at least some well-formed declarative sentences fail to express propositions on the basis of their lexico-syntactic constituents alone. It is argued that these cases do not form a homogenous class and thus that the minimalist is licensed in adopting different solutions in different cases. The chapter then explores the range of different solutions which the minimalist has in her armoury, including appeals to overlooked indexicality, overlooked ambiguity, and clarification about what work can be expected from genuine propositions. Exploring this range of solutions helps to clarify exactly what is involved in the minimalist position.
