Discovering the Musical Mind

Jeanne Bamberger

Oxford University Press

This chapter introduces Part II, expanding the field of interest, providing a broader and also more detailed framework for thinking about musical development. Asking what we take to be “progress” in musical development, there is primary focus on the tension between the permanence of the score and the perceived changeable meaning of entities it encodes. In turn, the chapter asks how “progress” is related to notions of musical complexity—in the unfolding of a developing composition, as well as in developing a “hearing” and a performance of it.
