This chapter proposes that we should notice, appreciate, and not be tempted to turn aside the organizing constraints that are naturally acquired through familiarity with the simples of our culture. It argues that if students are helped from the beginning to reflect on their hearings, including the conflicts that might emerge, they are more likely to build on, rather than forego, their ultimately powerful musical intuitions.
