Ecological networks

(p.373) 18 Ecological networks
The Structure of Complex Networks

Ernesto Estrada

Oxford University Press

This chapter analyses ecological networks, such as food webs, mutualistic webs, and landscape networks. It covers the global topological properties of food webs, in particular scaling relations and the relatively small clustering of food webs; the local structural properties of food webs with emphasis on the detection of keystone species using centrality measures; and the structural properties of landscape networks, including the relation between topological and mechanistic parameters, robustness to patch removal, and the clumpiness of central nodes. The chapter ends with a brief introduction to other kinds of ecological networks.

Keywords:   food webs, mutualistic webs, landscape networks, connectance-size scaling, keystone species, landscape robustness
