Palliative care for the older adult

(p.160) Chapter 13 Palliative care for the older adult
A Public Health Perspective on End of Life Care

Kevin Brazil

Oxford University Press

The societal shift towards an older population has implications for how palliative care should be provided. This chapter identifies some considerations that policy-makers and health care providers should regard in the provision of palliative care for the older adult. There is a strong body of evidence suggesting that the current health care system does not adequately respond to the needs of older adults. Health care in developed countries is organized around an acute, episodic model of care that no longer meets the needs of many individuals, especially older adults who typically have multiple chronic conditions. The integration of palliative care with life-prolonging care is important to ensure optimal care for the older adult.
