The Doctrinal Unity of the Act Requirement
Are there crimes of mental state or mental action, status, omission, or possession in Anglo-American criminal law, and do (or would) the existence of any such crimes belie the existence of any voluntary act requirement in that law? Are there one, four, or many, act requirement(s) in that law? Is the act requirement vacuous because it does not specify the time at which the accused must perform a voluntary act? These three forms of scepticism about the existence and coherence of a unitary act requirement in Anglo-American criminal law are rebutted.
