Chapter 7 looks at how non-EU immigrants are treated by the British and Italian press in a discussion of the notions of ‘us’, the insiders, and ‘them’, the immigrant populations, refugees, and asylum seekers. The findings of the chapter are compared to other studies of the British press (in particular, Baker et al. 2008), which found that immigrants were represented in a negative fashion. The findings in this volume do not confirm this for the British press, but suggest that the representation is negative in the Italian press.
