The phylum Xenoturbellida, along with Acoela and Nemertodermatida, is possibly a monophyletic sister group of the Bilateria, or may represent one or two side branches on the line leading to the Eubilateria. Recent evidence suggests that Xenoturbella is positioned within the Acoelomorpha, but a sister group of the Ambulacraria. It consists of two described species that are centimetre-long, ‘turbellariform’, marine worms with cilia having the characteristic acoelomorph morphology. Other studies indicate a closer relationship to enteropneusts. Xenoturbella have been variously linked to the acoelomorphs and to all other deuterostomes.
