The Loricifera is a newly discovered phylum comprised of nine known genera of microscopic animals with a total of about thirty species, but new types are still being discovered. Three of these genera are Nanaloricus, Pliciloricus, and Rugiloricus. The embryology of the loriciferans remains poorly understood, but Nanaloricus, apparently one of the most specialised genera, has a rather simple life cycle. The Loricifera is definitely a monophyletic group, and is considered separate from priapulans and kinorhynchs.
