The Euradiculata, a clade comprised of Calcarea and Proepitheliozoa, is not supported by many morphological traits, but got its name from the characteristic, cross-striated ciliary root present in all the ciliated cells of the larvae of calcareans and homoscleromorphs, and in monociliated epithelial eumetazoan cells in general. The ciliary root’s adaptive value could be a more stable attachment and orientation of the effective-stroke cilia. Several molecular studies suggest a sister-group relationship between Calcarea and Eumetazoa.
Keywords: cilia, Euradiculata, Calcarea, Proepitheliozoa, ciliary root, Eumetazoa
