The Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem
The Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem
The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was the finest fruit of the Crusades, a movement that often failed to live up to its ideals. Its ethos was the antithesis of the feudal system in which it flowered. Hospitallers vowed to serve the sick poor with the devotion that barons gave the king. The ‘lordship of the sick’ crystallized the essence of the gospel in a lapidary phrase that dictated a way of life. Thus, to the Hospitallers the hospital was the palatium infirmorum, ‘the palace of the sick’.
