This chapter first describes the main approaches in social science to defining organizational effectiveness and their suitability to serve as the basis for studies into international court effectiveness. It then discusses the application of the principal model of effectiveness — the goal-based model (or the rational system model) — to the world of international adjudication, and the necessary adaptations such application invites.
