Nabokov
Nabokov
Marías's prolonged interest in the work of Vladimir Nabokov is explored in this chapter, starting with a comparison of their public personae. Discussion aims to give a sense of the extent of Marías's reading of Nabokov, then turns to an analysis of his condensed retelling of the latter's most famous novel, Lolita. That condensed retelling, entitled ‘Lolita recontada’, turns out to be a beautifully rendered palimpsest of the original text, comprising quotation, paraphrase, and invention. That retelling of Lolita is then used to elucidate a reading of Marías's short story ‘Mientras ellas duermen’ in which an obsessive and aberr ant husband obsessively films his very young bride in order to capture her last moments on earth before he kills her.
