English: The early period
This chapter is about the early years of English and influences on British soil. The dominant force was Christianity and the loanwords that accompanied it. There was also considerable Latin influence as a result of translations and educational programs. Monastic schools created impetus for standardization of the emerging English language. Several attempts at a late West Saxon koine failed in part because external influences augmented the regional differences.
Keywords: Anglo‐Saxons, Celts, Christianization, Latin, loanwords, standardization
