The outbreak of war in August 1914 generated a sense of civic identity among many bourgeois women that fostered their cultural mobilization for war. Many German female artists supported the national war effort in both moral and practical terms and endorsed the perceived righteousness of the German cause. To begin with, many artists believed in the construct of a defensive war. As members of professional bodies that were aligned with the women's movement, artists were officially part of actions organized by the National Women's Service, formed by leading female activists in August 1914. Involvement in charitable initiatives was common, while some volunteered as nurses and yet others employing their artistic skills to produce posters rallying for civilian sacrifice and loyalty.
