Most genetic studies in psychiatry employ cross-sectional, case–control designs. Focusing on twin and family studies, this chapter introduces evidence in support of three developmentally sensitive models for psychiatric genetic research. The effects of life course approaches on the design and interpretation of genetic association studies are discussed.
