Life course approaches to mental illness carry important implications for mental health policy and practice. This chapter synthesizes the existing evidence base supporting the adoption of a life course approach to understanding, preventing, and treating mental illness. First, the various types of life course influences on mental illness are summarized. This is followed by an overview of the main ways through which this knowledge may contribute to the development of life course approaches and strategies, which can improve the effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness, of policies and interventions aiming to address mental illness.
