Bipolar disorder is a widespread and highly impairing psychiatric disorder with distinct presentations across the life span. This chapter reviews the extensive literature on risk for the development of bipolar disorder from before birth through the typical age of onset in early adulthood. The interplay of environmental and biological factors in the production and maintenance of the disorder from childhood to old age is also addressed.
