This chapter recounts how health and food safety reform have played a central role in progressively realizing the right to health of the Chinese. It begins with an overview of China’s health indicators. It then discusses China’s legal and accountability framework; the availability and accessibility of healthcare; systemic challenges to the right to health; and how the Residential Registration (Hukou) System and treatment based on special occupational status prevent persons from receiving equitable health-related benefits.
