The Miraculous Conformist

This chapter focuses on Greatrakes’ response to events in Ireland following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Threatened with financial ruin by the potential loss of lands accumulated in the 1650s, Greatrakes adopted various strategies in order to his social, economic and political position in local society. One strategy involved close collaboration with the person of Roger Boyle, earl of Orrery, who acted as both a patron and a protector in these years. Equally important, however, was his claim to have been granted the miraculous gift of healing, which was enthusiastically received by a broad cross-section of the Protestant population of Ireland in an age of great uncertainty and anxiety.
