This chapter is a narrative of his childhood in the provincial town of Rudkøbing, where his family owned a small pharmacy. He was educated together with his brother by a German wigmaker to become bilingual. The family history and pedigree are outlined, and the spirit of solidarity within his extended family is explained. Early signs of personal ambition are expounded.
