Symmetry Relationships between Crystal Structures

The symmetry principle emerged during the long history of crystals sciences. Space group theory developed in the late nineteenth century. After the discovery of X-ray diffraction in 1912, the need for the proper description of crystal structures led to the geometrical description of crystal symmetry, which culminated in the publication of the International Tables for the Determination of Crystal Structures in 1935, now called International Tables for Crystallography. Supplementary tables with the subgroups of space groups were published much later and are the basis for the applications described in this book.
