The Neuropsychology of Visual Art

The Neuropsychology of Visual Art

(p.341) Chapter 17 The Neuropsychology of Visual Art
Art, Aesthetics, and the Brain

Anjan Chatterjee

Oxford University Press

This chapter reviews the neuropsychology of art. First, it examines situations in which brain damage produces a paradoxical improvement in art production. Brain damage can improve art by creating a predisposition to produce visual art, providing individuals with a unique visual vocabulary, aid in people’s ability to render objects accurately, and improve people’s expressive abilities. Second, the chapter discusses the need for measurements of art if the field is to mature as a science. It reviews the use of the assessment of art attributes in studies of art production as well as the perception in the setting of neurological disease.
