By and large, neuroimaging studies in neuroaesthetics have focused on the appreciation rather than the production of aesthetic products in scanners. To a large extent this bias is rooted in methodological reasons, given that brain scanners are typically not optimally suited for facilitating ecologically valid instances of creative behaviour. However, recently a number of studies have used ingenious designs to enable the collection of functional brain scans during jazz improvisation, creative writing, and creative drawing. This chapter reviews these studies, in the process drawing the conclusion that the neurobiological bases of artistic and aesthetic production exhibit domain specificity, a major theme in creativity research.
