In ‘Mob, Cabal, or Utopian Commune? The Political Contestation of the Ancient Chorus, 1789–1917’, Edith Hall unveils the multiple ways in which discussion of the ancient chorus in the wake of the French Revolution, largely confined to the aesthetic sphere within the neoclassical period and generally limited to discussion of its philosophical import within nineteenth-century German Idealism, extends to political discourse relating to class, race, and collective activity. Tracing conceptual and real choruses through journalistic prose, poetic lyric, and popular song, the ancient chorus is revealed as both exemplary guide and derogatory label.
