The book offers advanced and contemporary readings in international trade and economic development, constructed on various fundamental topics that define the realm of this subject. The book brings together many of the issues that are considered staple reading for a course in trade and development, but was previously unavailable in a comprehensive manner. It offers systematic coverage of the relevant and state of the art research in trade and development. This includes detailed analysis of important sub-topics, such as, trade and the labour market, trade and public economics, topics in the theory of the second best, foreign aid, factor mobility, regional and global welfare, etc. More specifically, from Mercantilist theories of international trade and the well-known Prebisch-Singer doctrines, the book moves on to discuss the relationships between trade, factor mobility, and growth. Since foreign direct investments and foreign aid both contribute significantly to the larger debate on growth and development in the poorer countries, the book offers detailed analysis of these topics. The rich topics on international labour mobility, welfare, and occupational choices are relatively underemphasized in standard books dealing with trade and development. This book provides incisive accounts of these interactions and suggests new areas of research. Furthermore, the implications of trade on poverty, trade and production standards, international outsourcing, regional trading agreements, and financial crisis, as part of the recent developments in the subject, also receive substantial coverage in this book.
