What criteria can be used to evaluate the ‘authenticity’ of later stagings of ancient Mediterranean drama? Using concepts drawn from aesthetic theory and performance studies, different definitions of authenticity are proposed, which can be used to describe, analyzes, and evaluate modern stagings. The six methods of authenticity proposed are nominal/historical, expressive, processual, structural, inductive, and critical, and examples of each kind are provided. The second half of the chapter uses these concepts to discuss a recent production of Alcestis, which sought to employ a ‘democratic’ staging process.
