Nature’s Third Cycle: A Story of Sunspots

Arnab Rai Choudhuri

Abstract

This book argues that the 11-year sunspot cycle has become the third most important natural cycle affecting our lives, after the cycle of day and night and the cycle of seasons. The aim of this book is to describe the phenomenology of this cycle and to discuss the scientific principles required to understand it. Major solar explosions called solar flares—which disturb the earth’s magnetic field and ionosphere—occur more frequently during the peak of the sunspot cycle. Although this cycle was discovered less than two centuries ago—by Schwabe in 1843—it is becoming increasingly important for us ... More
