This chapter begins with a discussion of data private agencies (DPAs), which are tasked with overseeing the implementation of the statutory framework for data privacy. DPAs are often functionally independent of the governments or legislatures which establish them. Their oversight functions include handling complaints by members of the public over the processing of personal data and auditing of the legality of data-processing operations independent of complaints. The discussions then turn to other regulatory bodies; notification and licensing schemes; sanctions and remedies for breach of data privacy laws; and inter-legal aspects of data privacy law.
