This introductory chapter sets out the book's purpose, which is to explain the aims and principles of data privacy law along with the mechanisms for its oversight and enforcement from an international perspective. It surveys norms in international instruments and selected national implementations or variations of those norms, giving special attention to legislation of the EU because it is a key point of departure for the development of national data privacy regimes in many regions of the world.
