The Theological Vision of Reinhold Niebuhr's The Irony of American History

This final chapter summarizes the aim of the book, which has been to identify and describe Niebuhr's theological vision and show how it has shaped his understanding of the world. Many readers of Niebuhr today seem unaware of perhaps they ignore the Christian presuppositions that underlie and animate his writings. This has been partially responsible for the superficial reception of Niebuhr's thought today. The fact that Niebuhr's life was in many ways defined by the dialectic between his existence and his ideals is precisely why it is worthy of careful study and ongoing reflection.
