(p.5) Chapter 2 A networks primer
Animal Social Networks

Richard James

Oxford University Press

This chapter is designed as a largely non-technical introduction to some of the terms, such as edge, adjacency matrix, centrality, betweenness, and degree, that are used in later chapters of this book to quantify the structure and dynamics of animal social networks. The chapter first discusses the basics of networks and measuring network structure, including node-based measures of structure and network-level measures of structure. Then, the topic of clusters or communities is covered. Finally, the chapter outlines model networks and network models.

Keywords:   network, node, edge, adjacency matrix, centrality, betweenness, degree
