This chapter contains a description of the Cauchy problem in the general theory of relativity. The intended audience consists of physicists with basic knowledge of general relativity. Beyond the formulation, there is a discussion of ways of measuring the distance between initial data sets. Finally the notions of linear and nonlinear stability are compared.
