When formulating Einstein’s equations as an initial value problem, the topology of the spacetime is determined by that of the initial hypersurface. Moreover, in cosmology, it is natural to assume the initial hypersurface to be a closed 3-manifold. The chapter contains a description of geometrisation of 3-manifolds, a characterisation of closed 3-manifolds in terms of preferred geometries. Moreover, connections between geometrisation and comology are described.
