Reflections on the Role of EC in Leadership Development and Management Education
Chapter 7 examines the role of executive coaching as a promising leadership development approach to lead in complexity. An overview of the leadership development field and its role in promoting leader effectiveness and organizational effectiveness is presented. Considering that leadership is now well understood as a social, negotiated process involving constant interaction with one’s environment, the chapter emphasizes the importance of actively considering context when researching and practising leadership development. It is observed that those leaders who fail in their role are those who alienate themselves—in one way or another—from their environment. The chapter contends that one of the key benefits of executive coaching as a leadership development practice is the fact that it nurtures self-awareness and facilitates organizational mindfulness. It concludes with a discussion on how management education and executive coaching can combine forces for better leadership practice.
